It's easy to forget just how deeply weird the '90s were. On a global scale, you had the collapse of the Soviet Union and it's Warsaw Pact satellites (Sputnik's Down!). Hundreds of millions of people were thrown to the wolves of economic chaos and misery, and the Cold War that had provided the defining framework for understanding the world over the previous half century suddenly evaporated.

Hapless theorists were left to speculate about "the end of history," even. Confusing! At the local level it was a time when one could sit down with one's father as he watched NASCAR on TV and hear "Natural One" by my underground music friends the Folk Implosion - their song inescapably employed as bumper music before the next commercial break. Also confusing! One gets the sense it was a little confusing for The Folk Implosion's John Davis and Lou Barlow, too. They were in the middle of recording Dare to Be Surprised, the follow-up to their 1994 debut album, Take A Look Inside, when it happened.

The KIDS stuff - the handful of songs and instrumental tracks they'd contributed to the soundtrack of the now infamous Harmony Korine/Larry Clark film - had been something of a lark, but it was while recording it at Boston's venerable Fort Apache that they met Wally Gagel. A happy accident: Gagel happened to be the house engineer on duty the day they showed up, but they found in him someone whose general sensibilities, and, critically, enthusiasm for new wave, matched their own. The results marked a shift from earlier Folk Implosion efforts.

The partnership between Lou Barlow, already an indie-rock veteran with two of the era's most influential bands in Dinosaur Jr. And Sebadoh amongst his credits, and John Davis, the erstwhile librarian whose skeletal solo work paired elliptical guitar figures with lyrics that evoked the language poets, seemed at first like an opportunity to get silly with it in ways that wouldn't have sat quite right with their other projects. What came out of Fort Apache was different: mannered, moody, dubby even (they sampled Erik Satie, for crying out loud!). Lacking the budget to go back to the proper studio that the KIDS gig had afforded them, the Folk Implosion settled instead on Gagel's small recording space in Boston's South End.

There were rules, rules born from frank conversations. No chords. No strumming. No indie rock! They whiled away afternoons in the park writing lyrics, trading lines. And over a year of episodic sessions, a weekend here, a few days there, an album came together. When "Natural One" blew up it could've changed the calculus - the opportunity was there to scrap what they'd been working on and start over with major-label money - but they elected instead to stay the course, confident in the process. It seems a bit of a shame from this remove that Dare to Be Surprised was destined to live in the shadow of the KIDS soundtrack's success, but the '90s were a weird time, and it was sometimes hard to recognize things for what they were. What this was, it's clear now, is the sound of a band truly finding it's feet, and forging something genuinely new in the process.

Mixed Bag of Dog Squeaky Toys for Small Dogs
Color: 12pack, Size: Small
I recently purchased the SHARLOVY Dog Squeaky Toys for Small Dogs, a pack of stuffed animal puppy toys, and while they offer some positive aspects, there are a few drawbacks that prevent me from giving them a higher rating. One positive aspect of this toy pack is the variety it offers. With 12 different plush dog toys included, there is a range of options to keep my small dog entertained and engaged. The cute designs and soft textures are appealing, and they provide a good selection for different play sessions. The squeaky feature of these toys can be entertaining for dogs, and it adds an element of interactive play. The squeaker is relatively durable and has held up reasonably well during playtime, adding an extra level of excitement for my dog. However, the durability of these toys is a concern. While they are suitable for small dogs and light chewers, they may not withstand the rigorous chewing of more aggressive chewers or larger breeds. The seams on some toys have come apart relatively quickly, resulting in stuffing coming out or potential choking hazards. It is important to supervise playtime and monitor the condition of the toys closely. Another drawback is the size of the toys. While they are marketed for small dogs, some of the toys in the pack are quite small and may pose a choking risk for dogs that are prone to swallowing or have a tendency to tear apart toys. It is essential to choose the appropriate toy size based on your dog's breed and chewing habits. In terms of value for money, the price point for this toy pack is reasonable considering the number of toys included. However, the longevity of the toys may impact the overall value, as they may need to be replaced more frequently for dogs that are rough with their toys. In conclusion, the SHARLOVY Dog Squeaky Toys for Small Dogs offer a variety of cute and soft toys that can entertain small dogs during playtime. The squeaky feature adds to the fun, but the durability of the toys and potential choking hazards are concerns. It is important to choose appropriate toy sizes and supervise playtime to ensure the safety of your furry friend. If you have a small dog and are looking for a variety of soft and squeaky toys, this pack may be worth considering. However, if your dog is an aggressive chewer or larger in size, it may be more prudent to explore more durable and size-appropriate options to ensure the toys can withstand your dog's play habits.

Not invincible but good value
Color: 5pack, Size: Large
Great value for the money. We have 3 dogs and they are pretty strong chewers. They lasted a few months but ultimately succumbed to their inevitable doom. They arrived well packaged and with no unusual odors.

Actually indestructible!
Style: Two pack
I am always leery of items marked indestructible because my 100+ lb. dog chews through anything I buy him. But not this. It's solid plastic that he LOVES to chew on. And I love that there are 2 of them so he can have them in alternative places to play with. The shape and texture seems to entice him and keep him occupied for a few minutes, which is a blessing!
