A compelling biography of Mark Weiser, a pioneering innovator whose legacy looms over the tech industry's quest to connect everything--and who hoped for something better.

When developers and critics trace the roots of today's Internet of Things--our smart gadgets and smart cities--they may single out the same creative source: Mark Weiser (1952-99), the first chief technology officer at Xerox PARC and the so-called "father of ubiquitous computing." But Weiser, who died young at age 46 in 1999, would be heartbroken if he had lived to see the ways we use technology today. As John Tinnell shows in this thought-provoking narrative, Weiser was an outlier in Silicon Valley. A computer scientist whose first love was philosophy, he relished debates about the machine's ultimate purpose. Good technology, Weiser argued, should not mine our experiences for saleable data or demand our attention; rather, it should quietly boost our intuition as we move through the world.

Informed by deep archival research and interviews with Weiser's family and colleagues, The Philosopher of Palo Alto chronicles Weiser's struggle to initiate a new era of computing. Working in the shadows of the dot-com boom, Weiser and his collaborators made Xerox PARC headquarters the site of a grand experiment. Throughout the building, they embedded software into all sorts of objects--coffeepots, pens, energy systems, ID badges--imbuing them with interactive features. Their push to integrate the digital and the physical soon caught on. Microsoft's Bill Gates flagged Weiser's Scientific American article "The Computer for the 21st Century" as a must-read. Yet, as more tech leaders warmed to his vision, Weiser grew alarmed about where they wished to take it.

In this fascinating story of an innovator and a big idea, Tinnell crafts a poignant and critical history of today's Internet of Things. At the heart of the narrative is Weiser's desire for deeper connection, which animated his life and inspired his notion of what technology at its best could be.

Good value
Size: 40, Color: Black With Black Strip
My husband and brother in law both found these pants to fit a little smaller than regular dress pants.....mostly they were tighter in the thighs but the length/waist was perfect. They each ordered a size or two up and had the pants tailors to fit. They looked very sharp and were of a good quality considering they were not super expensive. I hope they have the chance to wear these more often!

Reasonable quality, slightly small, definitely unhemmed
Size: 42, Color: White With Black Strip, Size: 42, Color: White With Black Strip
If these pants are the right look for what you want/need, they're a reasonably good quality option. But that said, in practice these looked a little "cheesy" with the black stripe. I can't say for sure that's a result of how the product is made/how it looks, but I just couldn't see myself wearing them. That's assuming I could wear them... In terms of fit, they were slightly small in the waist for both pairs I ordered. I'm not sure what I thought they meant when I read that they were unhemmed, but for those looking for pants to take out of the box and wear... these aren't for you. The ankles are not "finished" and require hemming to make them look acceptable. (This was my fault, so I didn't count off for this)

They stand out, and are flashy, but sizing is complicated.
Size: 34, Color: Black With White Strip, Size: 34, Color: Black With White Strip
High-quality pants and flashy. The stripe adds a lot of attention for reasons both good and bad. The materials they were made are excellent quality. Pants are thick, but not too thick, and are lightweight, guaranteeing easy movement. Comfortable - could wear these all day. I do love their appearance. They made me feel like a million bucks. :) The only problem is sizing and fit. I normally wear size 34 for waist in jeans and dress pants like these, but the 34 I got didn't fit at all - too tight. So, I ordered a 36, and it fit, but barely. When I sat down, there was too much tightness in my "masculine area". I also ordered a 38, and, well, they were just too big - practically hung off me. A 37 would probably work for me in these, but they don't offer such a size. I have to return the 34 and 38. Will keep the 36, see if I can have it altered in some way. Length was fine. Being 1.86 meters, often the length in these pants is a little on the short side. In the photo, I'm wearing size 36 and the black pair with the gold stripe, which is actually more of a flashy yellow. I liked how I looked in them, but they were a little too tight at times, the belt wasn't even necessary. It enhanced the outfit though, don't you think.
